The authentic, patented, original carbon fiber driveshaft
Commonly known as the V2, the YFCM Authentic Carbon Driveshaft for the E9X M3 DCT & MT has been used by over 400 + M3 owners worldwide with single digit defects. The V2 was raved for its improvements to the S65's throttle response and connectivity to the rear end.
The backstory: from V1 to V2
YFCM's Chief Engineer is Steven Lee, former chief engineer at J-Fiber, a carbon driveshaft company in Taiwan that originally developed the V1 that was marketed by Mfactory.
The V1 driveshaft had issues with carbon tubes coming unglued from the flange. As a result of differences with JFiber's management, M. Lee left the company to develop his own technology and testing equipment in 2015.
As a result of branching out, he patented a new locking mechanism which physically locks the carbon tube into the connecting joint, thus reducing rotational forces which caused failures on the previous "V1" from JFiber.
Thus the "V2" was born and MFactory remained the marketer for the V2 under his own brand.
Initially commercialized under the YCW Engineering brand by MFactory, the product was unavailable in 2021 due to shortages and pricing increase of carbon fiber filament used to manufacture the tubes.
Unfortunately, MFactory decided to develop a new V3 version re-using the V1 flange and a low quality carbon tube that is extremely difficult to balance due to its subpar manufacturing method commonly used in golf clubs.
You can read more details about how this was uncovered here.
The Authentic V2
The Patented Locking Flange
The patented flange helps minimize the chance of the tube from spinning free of the joint. There has been no reported case of flange ungluing with the authentic YFCM product.
In addition, the patented flange is carefully machined to reduce weight in key areas, notably the outmost sections of the flange to further reduce weight on the outer radius on the flange. The machining work also extends to the bolt holes and surrounding areas.
This is engineered to reduce the initial moment of inertia, a key component to improving response.
Pre-Preg & Autoclaved Winded Carbon Tubes
The other significantly different and superior component of the Authentic "V2" is the carbon tube itself. It is smaller in diameter than the V3 to fit within the locking flange, and is sealed off to further reduce ungluing risks. The smaller diameter further reduces the moment of inertia.
The carbon tube itself is winded from pre-preg & autoclave carbon fiber sourced from sourced from Toray Industries. The carbon work is superb, with a visible mix of various carbon patterns to optimize the durability of the tube & weight loss.
The signature carbon tube is known for its yellow braided filament and is clearly identified with YFCM's logo & part number.
As a result of superior carbon tube engineering & construction, the YFCM tubes do not have any glued on balancing weights.
Improved Response via Lightweight & 1 Piece Design
The major benefits to the YFCM carbon driveshaft are its lightweight and 1 piece construction.
On the E9X M3, the OEM 2 piece steel driveshaft weights 23 lbs, while the Carbon Driveshaft weights between 11 lbs (MT) to 13 lbs (DCT)
The reduced weight helps lower the initial moment of inertia, providing improved throttle response and noticeably easier clutch operations on 6spd equipped M3s.
The 1 piece design retains the use of the flex disc on the transmission output shaft, but eliminates the need for a center support bearing. This bearing introduces further flex in the drivetrain and commonly fails on E9X M3 with higher mileage.
The 1 piece designs improves the connected feel with the rear end of the E9X M3, which is known to be wobbly in factory form.
Proprietary Testing Equipment
M. Lee also owns and operate an industrial automation company, from which he used his knowledge to develop proprietary stress testing equipment specific to carbon tube technology.
Each driveshaft is individually crafted, spun to over 8000rpm and tested on YFCM's proprietary torsional stress machine to over 5500nm torque figures.
Below are results from the proprietary testing equipment. Each driveshaft is tested, and I am currently discussing with YFCM to publish these results per order along with data on the OEM driveshaft.
For reference, most OEM 2 piece steel driveshafts have 2 to 3x times the measured vibrations compared to the YFCM "V2".
