Retaining the dual nature of the BMW M5

The BMW M5 blueprint has always been about the Ultimate Executive Sport Sedan. It pioneered the category with the E34 and dominated its competition with the E39 and E60. 

The E60 M5 is arguably the most Jekyll & Hyde M5 that was ever built with its V10 powerplant and SMG drivetrain. It is often an owner's first temptation to open up the exhaust system using muffler deletes and for good reason, uncorking the V10 F1 noise is a must have on this platform.

It's also an incredibly difficult to have it sound bad. 

Yet muffler deletes deprive the dual nature of the M5 - no matter what YouTubers claims. It's loud for bystanders at any given time, an impression that is often lost on M5 drivers due to the luxurious nature of its insulation. 

My valved exhaust experiment

Valved exhausts for the E60 M5 are few and far between, and most often ridiculously priced.

I reached out to Austin @ Valvetronic and explained my plans to blueprint a specific kit if the experiment was successful. Austin was all in and sent over a set of universal mufflers. I needed to source the tips on my own. 

My experience had ups and downs

The Bad: The eBay experience

We needed to heavily cut into the Y style inlet of the tips in order to fit the bumper line yet they stick out a tad too much to my liking. The heat expansion makes it worse.

Unfortunately the crappy eBay craftsmanship meant my tips are rattling due to poor welds inside the tips, and the seller is going all sorts of “oups sorry, not really” and are of course blaming the installation. 

The Good: The Adjustable Sound

The sound is exactly what I was looking for: it’s stock like when closed and proper when opened. There is no metallic rasp often associated with the lack of resonators or secondary cats. 

The Valved Kit leaves just enough extra decibels on the table for future long tube headers and primary cat deletes to squeeze out more performance. 

The vacuum lines were easy as pie to fish into the trunk via the rear bumper vents. I plugged into the trunk 12v and velcro'ed the vacuum pump to the trunk inside liner. 

The Great: New E60 M5 Kit

Austin @ Valvetronic is supporting the E60 M5 members of EuroConnex by developing a Sport Valved Exhaust specifically made for the E60 M5, avoiding my issues described above. 

This kit will include specific tip designs engineered by Valvetronic Designs to fit the M5 limited space for tips.

No rattling, no fitment issues - and classic designs. 

The tip design we selected is reminiscent of the classic E60 designs featuring the 4x83mm slanted round tips or the OEM+ 4x120x77mm oval tip designs. Both are staggered and will fit the contour of the OEM bumper.

Installation Notes

Professional installation is recommended. 

The kit will require piping be cut and welded by the muffler section. The tips are clamped on, but can be welded to your discretion. The vacuum lines should be routed by the rear bumper vents.
