It's smaller, and lighter.

The clutch surface area is 215mm in diameter instead of 240mm, lightening the flywheel from 23 lbs to 11.68 lbs.

A strong, rebuildable twin disc.

The cerametallic discs and pressure plate are rated up to 730 lbs ft of torque with a hardened spline.

Machined forged carbon steel

By being denser than aluminum, carbon steel is machined to a tighter package.

Machined for OE functionalities.

The package is machined to fit the original slave cylinder, starter and pilot bearing.

Required hardware

You will need new Genuine BMW crankshaft bolts (SKU: 11227805885). The Genuine BMW throwout bearing is a highly recommended part while in there (SKU: 21517548396).

Required modification

The inlet guide tube needs to be modified for the 420G to accommodate the twin disc clutch design. Instructions are provided by TTV.

Swipe right to assemble.

Starting with the first disc over the flywheel.
The first friction plate goes on, aligned with the machined outer bolt holes.
The second friction disc goes on top. They each are identified for orientation.
The second friction plate comes on.
The pressure plate completes the assembly, and is bolted to the flywheel.
Build journal: Special Series
Twinsies.

The 420G found in the E46 M3 and E39 M5 are finicky transmissions that are relatively intolerant to lightweight flywheels for street use.

They're loud, rattly, and are often coupled with a heavily sprung single clutch to compensate.

A twin disc should give us more power holding capacity, while dividing the required left foot strength between 2 discs.

In this Special Series, I document the Clubsport kit and the GrandAm flywheel.

Enjoy,
- Matt
