There are many configurations available for the E39 M5. Enthusiasts can mix and match to achieve their desired performance, sound, and weight targets.
The exhausts is divided into 4 sections:
Section 0: Headers
They can be fitted to OEM primary cats with connecting pipes
Section 1: Front Pipes
They must be installed with Supersprint headers
Section 2: Center X Pipe
Fits with OE or Supersprint sections
Section 3: Rear Mufflers
Fits with OE or Supersprint sections
My Recommendation
The S62 was, and still is a legendary engine. It can be uncorked and performance gains can be found in the header section by improving upon its primitive, log style design.
Optimal gains up to 40whp can be obtained when fitted with the HJS catted section 1. Engine tuning is recommended to maximize the new exhaust efficiencies.
The X pipe (Section 2) & Rear Mufflers (Section 3) are a sound enhancing modification first and foremost.
